Why we love it: We like a medium roast for Fazenda Rio Brilhante, to accentuate its milk chocolate notes, yet still allow its delicate nuttiness to shine as well. Great as an everyday French press/batch brew or espresso drink.

Who it comes from: For generations, Inácio Urban's family was producing food in Brazil on a small scale, but he saw the opportunity for more in 1980s Cerrado Mineiro. The land in the region was of little value at that time due to its difficulty to work with. Inácio started with 20 hectares of coffee, "to learn what it was like to grow coffee". Over 35 years later, his success and livelihood has become that of his children. Today his family has over 1,400 hectares of coffee planted, more than 100 direct employees and is well known for its award-winning natural coffees.

Why it matters: The family works to bring real change to the local community, so they invest in social programs for recovery, encouragement and maintenance of well-being. Among the projects is a school for young children from families with little financial conditions, which accommodates parental work schedules. They also offer employees a formal education as well as training on sustainable practices. As if that weren't enough, the group is even part of a program to revitalize schools in the countryside and support athletics programs in the region.
