PHOTOBOOKS OF NOTE 2019 - MICAMERA

Reading this list, one could say that the trend is for men to become private, family or children oriented, and for women to become more political. Interesting, no?
Books have been chosen by Giulia Zorzi and Flavio Franzoni - but also by our wonderful collaborators Sofia Masini and Giorgia Zaffanelli.
A note: as a rule, we have avoided projects we have been involved in.
So here we go:

1) KURT TONG - COMBING FOR ICE AND JADE
Jiazazhi
A beautiful and precious object presenting a love note to his nanny: the ‘amah’ are the self-combed women according to the Chinese tradition.
(reminded me of the movie ‘A Simple Life’ by Ann Hui)

2) GUS POWELL - FAMILY CAR TROUBLE
TBW
As soon as you get on the Powell’s car - Jimmy - you participate to the family life, whether sunshine or rain. And if broken, you will be taken care of. Get your handkerchief first, Gus Powell gets really close to your heart. Beautiful.

3) NICHOLAS MUELLNER
Lacuna Park: Essays and Other Adventures in Photography
SPBH
‘I begin with the obvious: we are all going to die, but we hope to feel a lot of things first’. This is how the text and image book starts: impossible not to continue.

4) CARMEN WINANT
Notes on Fundamental Joy. Seeking the elimination of oppression through the social and political transformation of the patriarchy that otherwise threatens to bury us
PRINTED MATTER, 2019
We would like to underline that this book has been picked up by the only man in the group.

5) MARK STEINMETZ
Summer Camp
NAZRAELI PRESS
We have not seen this book yet, but rarely have we been expecting something so intensely. Long-awaited publication.

6) ERIN O’ TOOLE (ed.) - April Dawn Alison
MACK,2019

Talking about archives: April Dawn Alison is the female persona of an Oakland based photographer who left behind an incredible body of images, here edited by associate curator Erin O’Tool. To buy for so many reasons: the work on archives, the work in itself, the interesting story, the way it represents the evolution of the publisher.

7) HANNAH DARABI
Enghelab Street, A revolution through books
Iran 1979-1983 (English version)
SPECTOR BOOKS / LE BAL
One of those times when you think that the Historical Photo Book Award in Arles could’t have a better winner. A must have, a selection of propaganda books in Iran made by artist Hannah Darabi.

8) PAUL KOOIKER
Eggs and Rarities
APE, 2019
Paul Kooiker’s eyes look mostly at his private sphere with his unique gaze. A beautiful object containing great images - and we get emotional everytime we bump into Lorenzo’s portrait. Thank you, Paul.

9) GIULIA IACOLUTTI
Casa Azul
The(M) éditions / Studio Faganel
Casa Azul - Blue House - is the first monograph by Iacolutti and deals with the process of identity construction - and particularly with the life histories of five trans women imprisoned in one of the male penitentiaries in Mexico City. For Giulia Iacolutti the art practice is an integral part of her  engagement as activist for human rights.
MiCamera is one of our favorite photobook stores in the world.... Last year we had a great popup there showcasing Ed Panar's book In the Vicinity, this coming year we hope to do something fun again. I love to go in and just challenge them to "sell me something" and see the fire in their eyes to show me something truly amazing.
